The Bevis Family

The photo taken on the occasion of Ruth's parents wedding in 1933. Left to right - standing: Mary Gregory (nee Harris), John Gregory, Ella Matilda Bevis (nee Booth), Wilfred Bevis, family friend (name unknown), Ivy Myrtle Gregory; sitting: Arthur Charles Bevis, Hilda Mary Bevis (nee Gregory). This picture was probably taken in the garden of the Black Boy public house, Wharf Hill, Winchester (John Gregory was publican at the time).

The Bevis family have lived in the Andover, Hants area since at least the late 1700s (we suspect considerably longer than that) when Daniel and Ann Bevis were recorded as living in St Mary Bourne in 1774. William Bevis, one of their sons, moved to Goodworth Clatford around 1800 where some of his descendants have continued to live until the death of Stanley Bevis (his 2 x great grandson) in 1997.

We have been able to trace some branches of Ruth's Ancestors back to the early 1700s particularly the Hendleys. Click on the link below if you wish to view these.

The rest of these pages have still to be developed.
