
The following is a list of some of the genealogy web sites we have used in our research and which we think may be useful to the family historian. Click the links if you wish to view these.
Ancestry.co.uk. UK censuses on the web. At the time of writing the 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 & 1901 censuses were available for England and Wales. Search facilities are included and it is relatively easy to find ancestors. I certainly have located ancestors whom I have not been able to find before. A large percentage of transcriptions errors have been noted but with carefully focussed searching most people can be found. There is a charge. The most economical, if looking to find and download a number of census pages, is probably the quarterly subscription. This site makes life a whole lot easier when tracing ancestors. Gone are the old days of trailing through film after film at the Family Records centre.
Buckinghamshire County Record Office. Known as the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies. Located in Aylesbury. A must for a visit if you have Buckinghamshire ancestry.
CENSUS ONLINE. This site is for connecting to the 1901 census.
Cindi's List. Links to around 33,000 genealogical web sites, name search and deposit facility and lots of other useful information.
City of Westminster Archives Centre. Records relating to the City of Westminster going back to at least 1561.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Site includes a "Debt of Honour Register" recording the details of over 1.7m Commonwealth forces who died in the First and Second World Wars. Details of 60,000 civilian casulaties are also given.
Documents Online. The Public Record Office's online system for downloading images of public records. A new site which is still being developed. Some images are free to download and some cost a small amount.
East of London Family History Society.
Familia. Family History resources in public libraries in Britain and Ireland.
Family Records Centre. One of the national Record Centres. Holds the indexes of births, marriages and deaths in England and Wales since 1837, microform copies of census returns 1841-1891 wills and aministrations to 1858 for the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, non-parochial registers from 1567-1858 and also the IGI index (computerised and microfiche versions).
FamilyRecords.gov.uk. This is a British government portal site and aims to give you easy access to information and links to the main UK family history sites on the web.
Family Search. The IGI on the internet. Well worth a visit. Also now includes the 1881 British census online
Family Tree Maker. Includes internet family finder search of 325 million names.
FreeBMD. Free access to computerised indexes for Births, Marriages and Deaths held by the G.R.O. Entries only partial at the present time but being added to regularly.
Genes Connected. The sibling of Friends Reunited. Has the objective of linking people with common relatives. You need to register so will cost you £7.50 at the time of writing. Has a good links page.
GenDocs. Has a lot of useful information if researching London ancestry including Victorian London Street Index, List of London Churches, List of London Cemeteries, Information Metropolitan Police and London Census Index. Well worth a look.
GENfair. A genealogical internet shopping facility.
GENUKI. UK & Ireland genealogical service on the Internet of 11,000 plus pages of genealogical information indexed and arranged by county.
Greenwood's Map. An 1827 map of London from Earls Court in the West to the River Lea and Greenwich in the East and from Highgate in the North to Camberwell in the South. Site hosted by Bath Spa University College.
Guild of One Name Studies (GOONS). Contains list of 3,000 names being researched. Yours may be among them!
Hampshire Genealogical Society. Gives information about Hampshire. Includes a list of members web sites. We ara members of this society.
Hampshire Record Office. Holds copies of most of the Parish Records (excluding Isle of Wight, Southampton & Portsmouth), census returns, wills, monumental inscriptions and other records for the Hampshire area. Also holds microfiche GRO index copies and other records and information. See their web site for full details.
Hertfordshire Archives & Local Studies. The County Record Office for Hertfordshire.
Imperial War Museum. As well as exhibits in the museum also holds miscellanneous records on military activities including list of 1st World War dead.
Isle of Wight Family History Society. Gives information about the Isle of Wight.
Landmark Historical Maps. View old Ordanance survey maps dated between 1846 - 1899 directly on your screen.
London Metropolitan Archives. London's eqivalent of the County Record Office. Holds copies of most of the Parish Registers for the old County of Middlesex and the County of London, with the exception of the City of London, plus of course loads of other useful records for the family historian. A visit here is essential if researching London ancestors. (See also our London Archives page in our London and Middlesex section).
London & North Middlesex Family History Society.
Museum of London. If you are interested in London's history then a visit to the Museum of London is a must!
National Archives. Formerly known as the Public Record Office. A major source for family historians particularly for service records. Has an on-line catalogue.
Network Rail. Includes a very useful facility for finding out times of mainline trains. Click the link 'timetables'
Roots Surname List. Interactive search. Enter a surname and up comes a list of people interested in that surname.
Snow's Map. An 1859 map of London with various indexes.
Society of Genealogists. Gives information about the Society of Genealogists and details of their extensive holdings.
Somerset Record Office. The County Record Office for Somerset.
Surname Web. Includes a searchable registry of over 70,000 surname links. You may register your web site and your major surname interests.
Surrey History Centre. The County Record office for London south of the River Thames and the County of Surrey. This is a fairly new facility combining the old record offices at Kingston and Guildford.
Street Maps and other information such as hotels. Nationwide and London.
Transport for London. Gives details of travelling about London, cost of tickets etc and other general information. Designed with the tourist in mind.
UKBMD. Births Marriages and Deaths on the Internet. Includes Local BMD indexes which are transcribed from the local registration entries.
UK Surnames. Combined all counties lists of surnames. Basic listing free - option of small annual charge for additional listing/sortation facilities.
West Middlesex Family History Society. Our local family history society covering the parishes of Ealing & Hanwell, our home ground!
